In India, growing access to cleaner energy sources such as solar and natural gas is changing people’s lives. But ensuring that all Indians have the fuel they need to help grow the nation has been a long journey.

ExxonMobil’s Tejas Tayshete shares how energy access has evolved and expanded in India, and how that changed his own life.

When the country’s energy sector was in early stages of development, many Indians didn’t have uninterrupted access to fuels needed for everyday cooking, heating and light.

But growing access to diverse energy sources such as natural gas and renewables is connecting more Indians with reliable, cleaner power. As India prepares for a lower-carbon transition, the country is expanding gas infrastructure to link its industries and people with more natural gas.

Piped natural gas, used for household cooking, currently reaches one in five Indians, with plans to reach 70 percent of the population over the next few years. India is also extending its physical pipeline network. It is currently working to add another 16,000 km of new gas pipelines to the existing capacity. This means more Indians will be using cleaner gas-based energy in the future for transportation, cooking, heating and other purposes.

Additionally, virtual gas pipelines—which use intermodal containers (large gas tanks) to move LNG by road, rail and waterways to areas not connected with physical pipelines—can especially help India’s industrial sector that currently relies on liquid fuels, to make a gas switch.

Tejas says that as India continues to grow and develop, it is crucial that all people have access to the energy they need to power their lives and build a brighter future.
