It can take just one good idea to change the world, to build a better tomorrow.

These ideas can come from anywhere, but in putting these ideas into action, it takes a myriad of people from different backgrounds, with different ways of seeing the world to turn these ideas into reality.

This is why diversity is a key pillar in helping to power the world. Because every story is unique, and every nation has different needs, so understanding how to provide the power to move these people’s worlds forward is critical.

But how do you attract the best and brightest?

Koh said it is about not just recognising that talent and good ideas exist from people around the world, but recognising that it is also about building the structures that allow people to thrive and excel.

This diversity isn’t just about men and women, it is also about looking for the right people from a myriad of different backgrounds that can give unique insights and new ways of developing solutions.

Koh added that is about allowing them to create the best paths forward for meeting the diverse energy needs of people in different countries and how energy access can act as a liberating force.

In building a truly diverse company, that provides all people an opportunity to play their part in providing the energy needed to power the world, requires strong leadership within the business, something she has seen at ExxonMobil over nearly 30 years.

She added that mentorship is a two-way street, allowing both people to learn from each other.

Koh’s advice for those starting a career – not just in energy but any industry – is to get to know the people you work with, supporting them to achieve as they support you.

This includes building networks, supporting people, and inspiring the next generation is crucial in helping to create a not just a better business, but a better tomorrow.

One such group supporting women in the energy sector is the LNG PowerPlay.

The global program not only highlights and awards women from across the industry who are making an impact in the sector, it also recognises current and future leaders of the industry and provides a space for women to network and do business.

Koh explains that many men across the industry have been supporters of these events, demonstrating how mutually supportive environments can improve business outcomes and lift all people across the sector. Together, we can make a positive difference.
