Think globally, act locally.

ExxonMobil does both. And as a company that helps meet the world’s energy needs while interacting with individual communities, it’s constantly striving to support a world on the move.

“I’m proud of the role we play in raising living standards,” writes Darren Woods, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, in this year’s Sustainability Report. “Millions of people have escaped extreme poverty in the last two decades due in part to increased access to energy.”

And, reflecting on its impact, the company also seeks inspiration from those with a similar mission.

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to make significant progress on the world’s economic, social and environmental challenges by 2030. Similarly, ExxonMobil examines the challenges of its global community – and the support that it can offer. While ExxonMobil contributes to certain aspects of all 17 SDGs, the following eight represent those most relevant to the company’s sustainability focus areas.

SDG Goal 1: No poverty

ExxonMobil is supporting the fight against poverty by expanding access to affordable energy supplies. Modern sources of energy are essential to improving living standards and growing economies.

SDG Goal 3: Good health and well-being

The health of the community can be measured by the health of local programming. That’s why ExxonMobil is making investments to strengthen those health systems, particularly the ones helping in the fight against malaria.

SDG Goal 4: Quality education

The company invests in educating students and teachers, particularly those in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, to ensure that students like Naiomi have the resources they need to succeed.

SDG Goal 5: Gender equality

The company invests in the development of female entrepreneurs and business leaders, which benefits all of society.

SDG Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy

ExxonMobil is working to reduce emissions across its operations and is also researching next-generation energy technologies like algae biofuels and fuel cell carbon capture.

SDG Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth

Look no further than the U.S. Gulf Coast, where ExxonMobil’s expansions are helping create 45,000+ jobs. The company has worked to hire new workers and support local suppliers to bolster the local communities where it operates.

SDG Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production

The company is always looking for new ways to work more efficiently and to create products (and fuels of the future) that help its customers do the same.

SDG Goal 13: Climate action

Meeting the world’s growing energy demand while simultaneously reducing environmental impacts, including the risks of climate change, is one of society’s most pressing challenges. By mitigating emissions in our operations, developing technologies, engaging on climate change policy and providing customers with solutions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, ExxonMobil is working to address this challenge.
